INTRODUCTION:
1. Turn with me in your Bibles to Rom. 9:14-17.
2. Last week we discussed Ron. 9:1-13 part 2.
3. We saw, Who Israel really is. V1-13
A. In this paragraph, we are going to start the discussion of our identity in
Messiah.
1. Paul brings in the witness of his conscience and the Holy Spirit:
a. This is about. (What Paul is feeling toward the people of Israel and his
love for his brethren)
b. Remember, Paul had been accused of. (Forsaking the faith by forsaking
the law of Moses and teaching others to do the same thing, look at Acts
21:17-26)
c. So as we look at this. (Paul has this deep intense sorrow for Israel, not
because they were following the law of Moses, but because Israel had
forsaken their Messiah)
1). Both of the words used to describe how he felt. (Deal with a heaviness of
Sorrow a deep grief that was deep within him longing for Israel to
Except their Messiah)
2). Look at Rom. 1:3. (The statement that Paul makes in this next verse is
One that intends to show Paul’s great love and deep sorrow for his
Brethren, but certainly can’t be done because the only one who could
Cut off or curse already did it Yahshua, but this is one of a parents
Who would go through something instead of their child.)
d. Look at Rom. 9:4. (They are Israelites theirs is the “adoption” means the
the placing as son’s of Yahweh, look at Ex. 4:22-23 Yahweh tells Moses
Moses to tell Pharaoh who Israel is, to identify Israel before the enemy
And Yahweh tells Moses that He will harden Pharaoh’s heart and lays
Out for Moses His plan, because Yahweh is not only going to tell
Them who Israel is but He will show them the One they serve)
e. But all of the richness of Israel. (Was given to them by Yahweh, the glory,
the covenants, the giving of the law, the temple service, and the
promises, the ancestors and from them by physical descent the Messiah
Himself who is Elohim over all, and praised forever Rom. 9:4)
1). Notice, Paul talks about promises. (So what are the promises that Paul
Is talking about? Look at Rom. 4:13, we see that the promises are the
The promises That Yahweh gave Abraham about his descendant that
Would come to him through seed by faith)
2). Look at Gal. 3:16. (Paul once again talks about seed he is talking about
Is none other than other that Messiah, now look at Gal. 3:27-29 so we
Have become heirs of Abraham through Messiah, thereby inheriting
The promises given to Abraham)
f. In Rom. 9:6 s deeper than one might think. (One might argue that is that is
true and they rejected their Messiah then all of this is for nothing, and
Paul says that isn’t true, there is more to this than meets the eye, the
Word of Yahweh has not failed at all)
1). Here starts the explanation. (Not all who are descended from Israel are
Israel, and in Rom. 9:7 not all are children because they were
Abraham’s descendants, Because Scripture says that the descendants
Of Abraham will be trace through Isaac, look at Gen. 21:12)
2). Look at Gen. 12:10-20. (It is believed that Hagar came from this
Exchange between Abraham and Pharaoh in Gen. 12:16 and some in
Jewish tradition go as far as saying that she was the daughter of
Pharaoh (But that is tradition) but most think that this is where she
Came from)
3). Back to Rom. 9:8. (Paul makes it clear that it is not the children that
Are descended by physical descent that are children of Yahweh but
Those that are by the promise who are children of Yahweh)
4). Turn with me to Gal. 4:21-31. (It says that Abraham had 2 sons, one by
The slave (Hagar) and one by the free women (Sarah), but the one by
The slave was born as a result of the impulse of the flesh, the free
women was from the promise)
5). Now, as we look at this. (I want you to get the full impact on this,
Abraham and Sarah had waited about 25 years after Yahweh’s
Promise before Sarah conceived, I don’t want to justify what they did
But I do want to learn from what they did, because we do this too)
6). Apparently, they decided. (That Yahweh needed some help in bringing
His promise into a reality, because that is what they were doing when
They decided to bring Hagar into the picture, look at Gen. 16:1-3,
Had been at Canaan for 10 years)
7). Back to Gal. 4:24. (Paul says that these women represent to covenants
One from Mt. Sinai who bears children into slavery which is Hagar
And she represents the current Jerusalem, look at Ex. 19:5-6 Yahweh
Says Now if you will listen and carefully keep My covenant, you will)
8). Ex, 20:18-21. (Instead of listening and carefully keeping His covenant
They removed themselves and continued standing at a distance, and
We have talked about this, then received Yahweh’s word on stone
That represented their hearts of stone and also kept them in slavery
And they continued to struggle with that all of their lives, but the
Promise was for them to be Ex. 19:56, they were and are doing things
By the flesh)
9). Back to Gal. 4:26-31. (But the Jerusalem from above is free, see Rev.
3:12-13, Rev. 21:2, 10 and Heb. 12:22 notice that it is clear that this
Jerusalem from above is by the Spirit not the flesh, in Gal. 4 Paul
Admits there are 2 covenants but it is only the covenant of the
Promise the one not by human hands but the one done by Him that
Are the true children of Yahweh)
10). Gen. 25:27-34. (Once again, we can see this through the birth right of
Esau and Isaac, it is without a doubt that Esau through being the first
Born had every right to the firstborn blessings, but in Yahweh’s
Economy being the first born was not enough, character is important
To Yahweh, Esau had no regard for his birthright and sold it to Isaac
To satisfy the flesh)
11). Now in writing these things we will be looking at. (Paul is beginning to
Teach us what is really important for us to live by because as we are
Going to see in the near future is that He wants us to be children of
The promise, and being children of the promise we will only be able
To realize the promise one way and that is by faith)
12). Looking ahead. (Read Rom. 9:31-33, it says that Israel pursued the
Law for righteousness and has not achieved righteousness and the
Reason is they did not pursue it by faith but by works, they stumbled
Over the stumbling stone, when we pursue righteousness there works
We can only experience what we can do, not what Yahweh can do,
Look at Matt. 19:24-26)
13). Look at Gen. 15:1-6. (Yahweh imputes righteousness to those who
Believe Him, now I didn’t say those who believe in Him, I said those
Who believe Him)
4. Today I would like to continue in this idea of our identity, and the identity of
Who Israel really is.
5. Read Rom. 9:14-17, Pray!
I. We really have to look at the selection of Yahweh at this point. V14-17
A. It is necessary to understand what Yahweh is talking about here.
1. In this pass of Scripture we are talking about Yahweh. (In this passage the
Question is posed, is Yahweh righteous or unrighteous, referring to the
Selection over Isaac over Ismael and Jacob or Esau)
a. Now this word righteous or unrighteous. (In the GK is really translated
just or unjust, and these words defined are lacking in justice or fairness
and unfaithful or dishonest, so this is the real question that Paul poses in
this verse)
b. The Scripture used here is Ex. 33:19. (And it is where Moses asks Yahweh
to show him His glory, but there is a lot here that I think we need to
look at to really understand what is being said here)
1). First, in Ex. 33:13. (Moses says if I have found favor in your sight
Please teach me your ways, and I will know You and find favor in
Your sight)
2). Now this makes since to me and it appeals to me. (To know the ways of
Yahweh and to understand what and the way He thinks would be
Amazing to me, wouldn’t it be to you?)
3). But look at what Yahweh tells Moses. (Ex. 33:19, Yahweh says that He
Will cause His goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim
The name Yahweh before you)
4). This word for goodness. (Hebrew means beauty, gladness, welfare,
Fairness, to go well with and that was to pass in front of him)
5). But Yahweh goes on to say. (I will proclaim the name Yahweh before
You, and I think that this is significant for us to get to understand,
And what I am about to say is going to sound controversial. But I
Here’s what I am not saying, I am not saying that the name of
Yahweh is not important because it is, in fact I think we need a deeper
Understanding of what His name means)
6). In Ex. 3:14, we see that the focus of Yahweh. (Is His existence and that
He exists separate from any outside help or factor and that is what the
The words I AM that I AM, there is nothing outside of Yahweh that
Causes or even helps Him to exist, this is impossible for anything else
Claim)
7). In Ex. 33:19 we see. (That the focus is on Yahweh’s gracious actions,
And the fact that Yahweh does what He does without any outside
Source, to determine His gracious actions)
8). So in this we can see. (That in His name we can see that it is the glory
Of Yahweh to be gracious to whoever He pleases apart from
Constraint originating outside of His own will, or His name reveals
Sovereign will)
9). Look at Ps. 148:13. (In this verse we see the same thing, Let them
Praise the name of Yahweh for His name alone is exalted, and His
Majesty covers heaven and earth)
10). We have talked about this before. (When we are to use the name, say
Of Yahshua when praying, is really about just saying the name that
Is important? No, it deals with the authority and character of Him)
11). So, let’s go back to Rom. 9:16-17. (The passage Paul quotes here is
Ex. 9:16, In this passage we will be looking at the Seventh plague of
The exodus which deals with hail, Yahweh wants Moses to tell
Pharaoh to take note that He is about to reveal Himself so they will
Know that there is none other like Him)
12). But notice. (Yahweh tells Moses to notify Pharaoh that Yahweh, and
My version says to let you live, the KJV says raised you up, and the
Hebrew says ordained you, the reason I bring this up is that it deals
With the idea of position not necessarily gave birth)
13). Now this fits considering. (Pharaoh was considered one of Egypt’s
God’s, and all through the plagues Yahweh was dealing with Egypt
God’s verses Him, the word to ordained then comes as a result of
Pharaoh’s position against Yahweh, now Yahweh wants His name to
Be known)
14). So did Yahweh. (Just want everyone to know the name (noun) of
Yahweh? No, He wanted everyone to know His honor, authority, and
Character which is what the word Shem or name means in the
Hebrew, so in Yahweh’s economy it is more important for us to
Understand that His name is connected to His glory)
15). So when Moses asked Yahweh to show him His glory. (That is why
Yahweh says that He will proclaim His the name of Yahweh before
Him in Ex. 33:19)
16). Look at Is. 9:6. (His name shall be, to me that is an interesting way to
Put it, His name shall be, that is not Yahweh, but what it is saying is
That His honor, authority, character shall be, so could it be that the
Name given to us in Exodus 3 of Yahweh encompass all of His glory,
Meaning that all of the things He is named is present in that one
Name of Yahweh? And to know Him as Yahweh is to know all about
His honor, authority and character?)
17). As Pharaoh as discussed earlier. (Scripture says that Pharaoh was
Ordained by Yahweh to be in that position, look at Rom. 13:1, it
Is proof that Yahweh places Governments in place and removes
Governments, and through this will in some way make the glory
Of Yahweh to be proclaimed to all)
18). These names are for us to know Him. (For instance, El Shaddi, El is
One of the names used for God but when you add other names as
Well, Shaddi has two meanings, the first is breast and the second
Is mountain and deal with Yahweh strength and ability to nourish
And provide all that is needed in His peoples lives , Gen 17:1-2)
19). The El Elyon. (Elyon is translated Exalted Most High and is found
In Gen. 14:19-22 and translated correctly)
20). Yahweh-Nissi. (We understand Yahweh but the word Nissi is
Translated banner, a banner is a flag that an army marches under,
But this is also is referring to the altar in the desert)
21). Yahweh-raah. (Once again we know that Yahweh, and I believe
Covers all of His names and character, but raah is translated
Shepherd Ps. 23)
22). Yahweh-rapha. (Once again we know Yahweh but the word rapha
Means healer look at Jere. 30:17)
23). Yahweh-shammah. (This is really interesting because it means that
Yahweh is there and it only occurs once and is found in Ez. 48:35
And it is reference to Yahweh has not forsaken Jerusalem)
24). Yahweh Tsidkenu. (And it means that Yahweh is our righteousness
Which is a good one to remember, in fact, I think all of these are
Important because if just knowing the name (noun) Yahweh is
Really not all that He wants us to know, these are the names that
Will help us know Yahweh and who He really wants us to
Understand our relationship with Him)
