INTRODUCTION:
1. Turn with me in your Bibles to 1 Corinthians 12:10-30.
2. Last week we started into a study on the gifts of the Spirit.
3. And we ended the discussion right at the gift of tongues.
4. We also talked about the Biblical truth that the gifts have not ceased.
5. And the Biblical explains that they won’t until the perfect comes.
6. And we took at look at what was meant by the perfect, or Yahshua’s return.
7. This week I would like to continue in the gifts starting with the gift of Tongues.
8. Let’s read 1 Corinthians 12:10-30, Pray!
I. Let’s take a closer look at these Gifts.
A. Hopefully we will look at body life today as well.
1. The gift of tongues:
a. Tongues in the GK. (Means a language and as I mentioned before
Strong’s emphasizes that in these cases it is speaking to a language that
Is not naturally acquired by someone, so it is one that is given to a
Person by the Holy Spirit)
b. Now that is easy to understand. (Because in 1 Corinthians 12:7 it explains
and we talked about that it is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit, not us
at work)
c. This word manifestation in the GK. (Exhibition, expression, and a
bestowment, and it comes from a GK word that means to render
apparent, to appear as to mean He is showing Himself to all in the
the body or congregation)
d. This is vitally important. (The reason, this is God Himself showing
Himself to His congregation, and the reason that this is important
For us to get is that 1 Corinthians was a corrective letter to that
Local body, look at 1 Corinthians 7:1, there was a letter written to
Paul by some of the Leaders at Corinth outlining problem they were
Experiencing there)
e. So really the only question that comes up. (Is the question, what are they
used for? And part of that question is pretty easy to see and part is a
little more difficult to understand, but Scripture does explain it, and we
will see as we go through this study)
f. Really, we need to break this question down into three categories. (The first
is Evangelistic, and the second would be prophetic, and the third would
personal edification and we will take a look at all of these in this study)
g. The first is evangelistic. (Turn with me in your Bibles to Acts 1:4-8, in
this passage we find some profound things being said that I think that
the Apostles and disciples did not understand at this time, Yahshua is
telling them something and they really don’t understand. I would like
for you to put yourselves in their shoes)
h. What I am talking about is the power on High. (I don’t think that they
understood what that was but if you will notice no one really asked any
questions as to what that means, maybe they didn’t want to look stupid,
or maybe they had a whole lot of others things on their minds, or maybe
they just trusted their Master, and I like this one, maybe we should just
trust Him and do what He says)
i. All they knew is that they would be Baptized in the Holy Spirit. (This word
word Baptize is the same word used for the baptism that John did in the
water, on this was to be in the Holy Spirit, the word means to be
immersed, or to make fully wet, to come from under, so they would be
fully immersed and come from under the Holy Spirit on the day
Yahshua was talking about)
j. But look closely at Acts 1:8. (They will receive power when the Holy
Spirit comes on you, and they will become His witnesses in Jerusalem, so
We actually see two different things happening here, one they will be
Baptized in the Holy Spirit, and they will receive power from on High to
His witnesses, this word power is the same word we talked about last
Week which is dunamis and it is where we get our English word for
Dynamite, and it means force, power and mighty work)
k. Turn with me to Acts 2:1-13. (In verses 1-2 it says that the sound of a
mighty rushing wind came from heaven and filled the house where they
were staying, now this is interesting, the word used here for wind is a
GK word pnoe and it is not the word that I would have expected there,
This GK word is a form of the word I would have expected, the word
I thought would be there was pneuma and the word for the Holy Spirit
Is hagious which means Holy so it would have been Hagios pneuma, but
What is there is pnoe which means respiration, so this baptism of the
Holy Spirit is like He has given us CPR when you breath for someone it
Is called respirtation)
l. Then the next thing. (Is that tongues of fire came over each one there, this
word tongues is the same word used for the gifts of tongues, and means
languages and once again it speaks in terms of a language that is not
naturally acquired)
m. The word filled or the wind fill the house. (Uses 2 words filled all, which
means in the GK that it was not only the house but it filled it completely
meaning everything in it as well, so two separate things happened, the
house including them were filled with this respiration and then the
languages was divided among them)
n. Now look at Acts :5-13. (Now don’t be fooled by this next part, it says
that there were Jews staying in Jerusalem, devout people from every
nation and they all heard them speak in their own language, so they
weren’t Hebrew speaking people, because they heard them in their own
language, and what were they saying? The mighty works of God, they
were doing the same thing that they were told by Yahshua that they
would do become His witnesses)
o. So we are able to see. (That these tongues were used as an evangelistic
gift to proclaim to others the mighty works of Yahweh through His Son
Yahshua Messiah, and He is all about evangelism He wants us to each
Out to the lost with the Good News of Salvation)
2. Now, let’s look at this idea of tongues as Prophetic:
a. Look at Acts 14:1-5. (Okay, let’s get things started off on the right foot,
all of the gifts need to have its basis out of love, and we are going to talk
about that later, because no matter what I do if it doesn’t have its
foundation in love it is no different than the pagan religions, look at
1 Corinthians 13:1 and this addresses what I just said)
b. Look at Paul’s wish in 1 Corinthians 14:5. (He says I wish that all of you
spoke in tongues, but even more to prophesy, prophesy is greater unless
there is an interpreter to interpret so the body can be built up in the
prophetic word that was given, look at 1 Corinthians 14:12-13 which
tells us that we should seek to excel in building up the church, so if
someone has a tongue, that person who has spoken in a tongue should
pray for the interpretation, for the building up of the congregation, or
if you know there is someone with the gift of interpretation there or
present look at 1 Corinthians 14:27-28)
c. Consider this! (The goal is to edify and build up the congregation, and
that is why Paul is teaching this congregation about this stuff we are
looking at here. Tongues when interpreted will edify the body!)
d. Look at 1 Corinthians 14:21-25. (Paul says that the tongues in the
congregational setting is for unbelievers, so what is he talking about in
this passage? Paul in verse 21 quotes Is. 28:11-12 which when read in its
entirety is a message to Samaria and is a letter of rebuke because they
had fallen into a state of unbelief and so He sends people of other
tongues in and they still will not believe, look at Duet. 28:49 He will
bring a nation in that they do not understand the language, the
prophetic part of this is a message of His love for us and for us to begin
once again to return to our first love)
e. So, tongues. (Can be used by the Holy Spirit to remind us of His love for
us and also that we may have wondered away from truth and have
fallen into a state of unbelief, and is meant to remind us we need to turn
back to Him in faith not only believing but allowing Him to do the work
in us and through us that He has called us to do. He has given each
person a gift to be used to build up the assembly in Him)
3. Tongues also are for self-edification:
a. Look at 1 Corinthians 14:4. (The one who speaks in another tongue
builds himself up 1 Corinthians 14:13-18 I can give praises before
Yahweh in a tongue for myself often called a prayer language, look
At Romans 8:25-27 speaks of the process by which the Spirit who
Knows our needs better than we do intercedes in the Spirit, and that
And goes back to 1 Corinthians 14:4)
b. We are not to forbid the speaking of tongues. (Look at 1 Corinthians
14:39, we are to prophesy, but we are not to forbid the speaking of
Tongues)
