Heb. 5:1-2

INTRODUCTION:

1.  Turn with me in your Bibles to Heb. 5:1-2.

2.  Last week we took a look at Heb. 4:16.

3.  We saw, We are able to approach the Throne with boldness. V16

  A.  I think we need to understand what the throne is we are approaching.

    1.  First we need to look at the covenant made with Abraham:

      a.  Gen. 15:1-21. (This covenant was made between a greater and

lesser person, for instance, a King and a slave)

      b.  The idea was the King would walk in first. (Saying if I don’t keep

promise to you, you can do this to me, divide me in half)

      c.  The idea is the slave would then walk it. (By doing so made the

agreement if he didn’t carry out his side the king could do this to

          him)

      d.  In this case Abraham never walked that covenant. (Yahweh and

Yashua did signifying His death for us because we couldn’t

Carry out our end of things on our own)

      e.  The smoking furnace is Israel’s affliction in Egypt. (Look at Duet.

4:20 Israel’s deliverance, and that is the definition of Salvation)

      f.  Look at Ex. 14:19-20. (It appeared as a dark cloud to Egypt, but a

light to see to Israel, Yashua is known as the Word, or a lamp onto

our feet and a light unto our path Ps. 119:105 and look at John

1:1-5 he was a light unto man)

      g.  So Yahweh knew we couldn’t keep it on our own. (So Yashua

the sacrifice for our failure to keep that covenant)

    2.  Now let’s look at Ex. 25:16-22 the mercy seat:

      a.  So this word mercy seat is something we need to look at. (The Heb.

word is “lid” but the root word is “to cover, to appease, to cancel,

to atone for” the Throne of judgment if you will)

      b.  In the ark, or box below was the “tablets of testimony”. (Look at

Ex. 19:5-6 if you listen and keep, then you will be my Kingdom,

           Also look at 1Peter 2:6-10)

      c.  So this mercy seat represents the place of judgment. (His throne

or His rule based on His instructions, and His provision, look at

           2 Peter 1:3-4)

      d.  Now understand , not just anyone could approach this place. (It was

only through the chief priest, we see this in Lev. 16 the Day of

Atonement and we saw it in the definition of chief Priest)

      e.  Now understand, we still have a Chief Priest. (His name is Yashua,

look at Heb. 4:14, we still approach the Throne of Yahweh

our High Priest Yashua, no one can approach except through

           Him)

    3.  The idea is we can “come to” or “approach” the throne:

      a.  But it is through Him. (He is the one serving before the throne of

           Yahweh)

      b.  We still have a mediator between us and Yahweh. (And it is through

Him, look at 1Tim 2:5-6 one mediator between us and the

            Father)

      c.  This has to do with the sin sacrifice. (Yashua became the sacrifice

for sin, His blood was accepted as our covering and cleansing for

           our sin)

      d.  So we are able to approach our judgment. (With boldness, or

           confidence)

      e.  This word “boldness” in the Heb. is made up of two words. (The first

           is “with” or with boldness)

      f.  But the second word. (Is “assurance” but also means openly and

          without concealment)

      g.  This goes back to Ps. 103:6-19. (He has removed our sins from us

as far as the east is from the West)

      h.  The idea is when we stand before Him to be Judged. (We need not

approach our Judgment in fear based on His sacrifice for us)

      i.  It is interesting to me that for those that keep His Testimony. (By

entering into a relationship with Him through Yashua, and keep

His commands it is never known as the judgment seat, but instead

Is known as the mercy seat or throne of grace.)

      j.  It seems to become a judgment seat. (With those who do not enter

through Yashua and His blood and don’t keep His commands, we

find even in the wilderness it was known as the mercy seat)

      k.  And this brings us into the last portion. (The reason for this

this discussion in the first place)

    4.  The purpose is for us to be able to receive mercy and grace:

      a.  Let’s go back to this word “approach”, KJV is to “come”. (GK

means to “draw near to” and can mean to “Worship”)

      b.  This is very important for us to get here. (The writer implies in this

very that if we don’t draw close for the purpose of worship, we

           will fail to receive something)

      c.  In the original language “so that”. (Means “in order that” meaning

“in order that something may incur”)

      d.  In this case to receive mercy and grace. (We must draw near to

mercy and grace, the idea, once again of worship)

      e.  This leads me to believe that intimacy. (Is vital for us to be able to

           receive mercy and grace)

      f.  Now it get even more important for us to get a handle on this. (So we

will be able to receive help)

      g.  My version says “proper time”. (But KJV says “in time of need” so

it is saying we need to draw near to mercy and grace, so we will

receive mercy and grace when we need it, or Him)

      h.  The Aramaic says. (In time of affliction, or we could say when we

are going through trials and persecutions)

1).  But appointed most likely is best. (Look at Heb. 9:26-27 which is

A reference to Gen. 3:19 We will return to the dust, and 2 Cor.

5:10 talking about judgment this GK word tribune is Judgment

              Seat of Messiah)

2).  The root word for appointed. (Is fixed and a definite Time, so

There is a fixed or definite time for judgment to occur)

      i.  Let’s look a little closer at this time of need or affliction. (Let’s look

John 14:15-18 we see it is the Rauch or the Holy Spirit)

      j.  Look at John 14:26. (He teaches us and reminds us of everything

          Yashua said)

      k.  Look also at John 15:26. (He will testify of Yashua, always gives

           testimony of truth)

1).  Also look at 1 Cor. 2:15-16. (We have the mind of Messiah)

      l.  This word “comforter” in the GK. (summoned, called to one’s side, especially called to one’s aid 1a) one who pleads another’s cause before a judge, a pleader, counsel for defense, legal assistant, an   advocate 1b) one who pleads another’s cause with one, an intercessor)

      m.  Even though we are given a free gift. (We must also

maintain our relationship with Him, as we said last

week, this is done through obedience and seeking His

            face)

4. In this next section we will look more closely at the high priest.

5.  Especially a contrast between the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthood coming in the near future passages.

6.  Let’s read Heb. 5:1-3, Pray!

I.  Let’s look at the appointment and reason for the high priest. V1-2

  A.  The writer goes back to the High Priest described in the Bible as

Opposed to one that would have been contemporary.

    1.  Every High Priest is appointed for service to Yahweh:

      a.  This word “appointed” or “ordained” in the GK. (Means to set

or to put in place, to appoint)

      b.  But it is made up of two root words. (The first means to “go

between, as in between two individuals)

      c.  Now the second root word means. (To stand or to be

           stationary)

      d.  So in this we get the idea that the High Priest. (Was to stand

           between two individuals)

      e.  Look at Duet. 5:28-31. (In verse 31 the word “stand”

means to “appoint”, or “ordain” and it is used with the

understanding of being between man and Yahweh so

something could be relayed between man and

           Yahweh)

      f.  So this high priest was to stand. (Ordained to go between

man and Yahweh for the purpose of relaying)

      g.  But look where the High Priest is taken from. (He is to be

taken from men, this is important for us to get

           this will also qualify Messiah)

Look at Ex. 28:1 come from the Israelites

Look at Lev 21:10 Taken from among his brothers

1).  Look at Is. 7:14 Prophecy of Yashua born among

                   His brothers

2).  Look at Matt. 3:16-17 and Luke 4:18 which comes

From Is. 61:1-2 and look at Is. 11:1-2 describes

Messiah High Priest and King, mark this down

                    We will be revisiting this.

   2.  Now look at the one served, it is Yahweh:

      a.  This word service is really interesting. (GK means “in front

of” or in this case in front of God)

      b.  So this high priest was to go in front of God. (And this had to

           do with men)

      c.  We are able to see this in Lev. 16. (Aaron went before

Yahweh for himself and the people, look at verses

            6, 15 of Lev 16)

      d.  We see the purpose of standing between. (In this case

            between Yahweh and man)

    3.  The purpose is to offer gifts and sin offerings for men to Yahweh:

      a.  This word “offer” in the GK. (Means to “bear towards” or

           “to tender”)

      b.  It is made up of two root words. (One is to “carry” or “to

bring” and the other is “forward” or to carry

           something forward )

      c.  Now, what is identified in this verse. (The first is “gifts” GK

           means present, or gift)

      d.  But the second is “sacrifice for sin”. (The word sacrifice GK

means “to blow smoke” but also means to “kill” or

“slay” and Heb. means “to slaughter”)

      e.  “Sin” in the GK and Hebrew means. (To wonder away from

            or to violate Yahweh’s law)

    4.  In verse 2 we find the frame work to minister from:

      a.  He is able to deal gently. (The word able is “to be able, have power whether by virtue of one’s own ability and resources, or of a state of mind, or through favourable circumstances, or by permission of law or custom)

      b.  And the word “gently” means. (GK to be affected moderately or in due measure to preserve moderation in the passions, especially anger or grief of one who is not unduly disturbed by the errors, faults, sins of others, but bears them gently)

      c.  Also those “going astray”. (GK to go astray, wander, roam about, now remember the definition of sin is to violate

or wonder away from Yahweh’s law)

      d.  The “ignorant” . (GK to be ignorant, not to know, not to understand, unknown, but the root word is to not exercise the mind, or don’t study to show themselves approved)

      Look at Acts 19:1-7

      e.  The reason for these qualities is, “he is subject to weakness”.

(The word weakness is to be without  strength and

And to be impotent, but to word “subject is

Interesting and made up of two root words)

        1).  The first is “around”

        2).  Is to “lie”

3).  Put these two together it means “to lie around” meaning to be

So weak we just lie there and don’t do anything.

      f.  Here is the idea. (The high priest is able to stand between

the people and Yahweh with intimate understanding of

their needs due to their being strengthless, from his

          own experiences)

Look at Ex. 32:1-4 The golden calf

Look at Ex. 32:11, 31-32 Moses interceding

Look at 1 Tim. 3:1-7 Qualification for Overseers

Look at Acts 20:28 Shepherd the flock
