Lev. 21:1-24:23

  1. In the course of this Torah portion we see a number of times that the Heavenly Father states that He is the one “that sanctifies you.” To whom is He speaking?
    1. What are some of the differences between the Levites and the common man outside of tribal birth?

1. What were the consequences of an Israelite who is not a Levite that goes into the tabernacle precinct?

Gen 4:7  If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.

A primitive root; properly to miss; hence (figuratively and generally) to sin; by inference to forfeit, lack, expiate, repent, (causatively) lead astray, condemn: – bear the blame, cleanse, commit [sin], by fault, harm he hath done, loss, miss, (make) offend (-er), offer for sin, purge, purify (self), make reconciliation, (cause, make) sin (-ful, -ness), trespassive

Question 1:

Lev_22:9  They shall therefore keep my charge, lest they bear sin for it and die thereby when they profane it: I am the LORD who sanctifies them.

A primitive root; to be (causatively make, pronounce or observe as) clean (ceremonially or morally): – appoint, bid, consecrate, dedicate, defile, hallow, (be, keep) holy (-er, place), keep, prepare, proclaim, purify, sanctify (-ied one, self), X wholly.

Question 1b Given to Aaron for service:

Num 3:5  And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 

Num 3:6  “Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister to him. 

Num 3:7  They shall keep guard over him and over the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, as they minister at the tabernacle. 

Num 3:8  They shall guard all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, and keep guard over the people of Israel as they minister at the tabernacle. 

Num 3:9  And you shall give the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they are wholly given to him from among the people of Israel

The Heavenly Father has taken them for Himself:

Num 3:12  “Behold, I have taken the Levites from among the people of Israel instead of every firstborn who opens the womb among the people of Israel. The Levites shall be mine,

They have been separated from the congregation of Israel:

Num 8:6  “Take the Levites from among the people of Israel and cleanse them. 

Num 8:7  Thus you shall do to them to cleanse them: sprinkle the water of purification upon them, and let them go with a razor over all their body, and wash their clothes and cleanse themselves. 

Num 8:8  Then let them take a bull from the herd and its grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil, and you shall take another bull from the herd for a sin offering. 

Num 8:9  And you shall bring the Levites before the tent of meeting and assemble the whole congregation of the people of Israel. 

Num 8:10  When you bring the Levites before the LORD, the people of Israel shall lay their hands on the Levites, 

Num 8:11  and Aaron shall offer the Levites before the LORD as a wave offering from the people of Israel, that they may do the service of the LORD. 

 Question 1a1:

Num 1:51  When the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. And if any outsider comes near, he shall be put to death. 

Num 1:52  The people of Israel shall pitch their tents by their companies, each man in his own camp and each man by his own standard. 

Num 1:53  But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the people of Israel. And the Levites shall keep guard over the tabernacle of the testimony.”

Exo_30:30  And thou shalt anointH4886 AaronH175 and his sons,H1121 and consecrateH6942 them, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office.H3547

Lev 8:12  And he poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him to consecrate him.

Lev 8:23  And he killed it, and Moses took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot. 

Question 2:

Deu_7:6  “For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

Deu_14:2  For you are a people holy to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

Question 2a:

Lev_18:3  You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived, and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you. You shall not walk in their statutes.

Exo 23:23  “When my angel goes before you and brings you to the Amorites and the Hittites and the Perizzites and the Canaanites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, and I blot them out, 

Exo 23:24  you shall not bow down to their gods nor serve them, nor do as they do, but you shall utterly overthrow them and break their pillars in pieces.
