1 Corinthians 12:7-11

INTRODUCTION:

1.  Turn with me to 1 Corinthians 12:7-11

2.  Last week we took a look at really the beginning of the Gifts as we looked

At where the gifts come from.

3.  We also took a look at the purpose of the gifts.

4.  Today, we are going to do a little review but we are going to moved forward as

Well to see some of the specifics Paul teaches in these verses.

5.  Let’s read 1 Corinthians 12:7-11.

I.  We need to focus on this one word as we move forward. V7-11

  A.  Actually, we need to focus on three words as we move forward.

    1.  The first word is “Manifestation”:

      a.  This word manifestation in the GK. (Exhibition, expression, and a

bestowment, and it comes from a GK word that means to render

apparent, to appear as to mean He is showing Himself to all in the

           the body or congregation)

      b.  This is vitally important. (The reason, this is God Himself showing

Himself to His congregation, and the reason that this is important

For us to get is that 1 Corinthians was a corrective letter to that

Local body, look at 1 Corinthians 7:1, there was a letter written to

Paul by some of the Leaders at Corinth outlining problem they were

           Experiencing there)

      c.  And as we look at 1 Corinthians 12. (We are able to see that the idea of

Spiritual Gifts were on that list of things they asked Paul to address, and

If we look at the congregation today we will see that it is a good thing

That the Holy Spirit led them to save these letters so we all will be able

          to Hear the correction needed)

      d.  Another word or words is “common good”. (My version says common

good, but the KJV says profit withal or meaning to profit all, but the

GK says “to bear together”, and to be better for, to bring together and

Gives us the idea of being complete)

      e.  Look at Colossians 2:4-10. (This passage deals with not just what we are

as individuals but what we are as a body, and look specifically at verse

10, my version says filled, and the KJV says complete which are words

Used to define the GK word, but one of the words used to define this

Word is to be made “complete” as we are filled by Him)

      f.  So, through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. (He manifests Himself

through us and makes us complete or perfect in Him, so the gifts are for

the purpose of making complete and perfect in Him who is the head)

      g.  Now, Mark this item. (Because it will become important later as we look

at the idea of whether the gifts have been removed or not, in fact we can

look at that now, and maybe this is a good place)

      i.  Turn with me in your Bibles to 1 Corinthians 13:8-13. (As we look at this

passage we see that there is a time coming when these gifts will be done

away with so to speak, and uses the word “perfect” when the perfect

comes the partial will cease, the word “perfect” in the GK is translated

to complete or to be full, this goes along with 1 John 3:2-3, it is about the

return of the Messiah and we will be like Him because we will see Him

          as He is)

      j.  Now look back to 1 Corinthians 13:8-9. (This makes it clear that when He

returns that prophesy, tongues, knowledge will come to an end, why?

Because we will see Him, and have Him physically with us and we will

Be like Him because we have seen how He is, so none of the gifts have

Been done away with at this point, but will be when He returns)

II.  So let’s start looking at the gifts as outlined in this same passage. 8-11

  A.  I suspect that there may have been questions about these gifts in these verses.

    1.  To one is given is given a message of wisdom:

      a.  Wisdom in the GK. (Translates wisdom and can be a reference to both

spiritual and physical or earthly wisdom if you will)

      b.  Now this should not be a big surprise. (Turn with me to Exodus 31:1-11

in these verses we find that Yahweh had put His Spirit in these people

to build the Tabernacle and all of the things in it, sometimes we think

of these things as just skills, but skills come from Yahweh, the word

wisdom in the Hebrew means wisdom, skill and wit)

      c.  The next is a message of Knowledge. (First, I want you to see that in both

of these first two gifts come in the form of Message or word, which in

GK is logos which is translated as word but comes with the under-

Standing od divine expression, and the word Knowledge is which is

Translated to know, but also to be able to perceive a situation)

      d.  To another faith. (This word faith is the same word used for all kinds of

faith such as having faith to be saved Ephesians 2:8-9, and the truth

that we each have been given a measure of faith. The Spiritual Gift of

faith is different from those kinds of faith, this faith is for the purpose

of building the body up and we can see in Acts 3:1-10)

       e.  This faith. (Not only believed but acted on that belief, and included the

Gospel of truth with it and acted on it as Peter hand him the handed

And told him to get up and walk, this is the faith that after being

Being beaten they came back to the Body and prayed and the very

Foundation of the building they were in was shaken Acts 4:1-31)

      g.  Gift of healing. (GK for healing means to cure and healing, look at Acts

5:12-16 which tells us that many signs and wonders were being done

Among the people and people were coming to a saving knowledge of the

Master and as a result people would bring people on stretchers to them

To be healed, look at Mark 16:14-18, these are signs of those who

           Believe, those He has gifted)

      h.  Performing of Miracles. (GK is dunamis and is where we get our English

word dynamite and really is translated the same way, it means force,

ability, might, power, strength, and we can see this at work through

Moses and Aaron as they confronted Pharaoh and his magicians during

The Exodus 7 through 11 but also can be seen as the disciples

Confronted the demonic throughout the New Testament)

      i.  The Gift of Prophesy. (There is really 2 aspects to the gift we have to look

at, one is the idea that a prophet will give word to the future of what

Yahweh will be doing and we find this in the Prophet sections of the

Bible, the other aspect of prophesy is fore telling which we find Moses

Who was considered a prophet spent most of his time doing which was

Telling and explaining what Yahweh said and what that meant for

Them or how they should respond to what Yahweh had said, the

Prophets themselves spent more time expounding than fore telling the

Future, also as an example look at 1 Samuel 19:23-24 we find Saul as

The Spirit came on Saul he prophesied and if you will notice he

Collapsed and laid there all day and night)

      j.  The distinguishing of spirits. (This gift is able to tell the difference

between which spirit is operating or maybe we could say be able to see

the hearts of men and what spirit was in operation there, we see a good

example of this in Acts 5:1-11 as Ananias and Sapphira lied to keep

more of their money, not realizing they were lying to the Holy Spirit,

and Peter was able through the Spirit discern the lie)

      k.  Different kinds of tongues. (GK is glossa and means tongue or language

and implies one that is not naturally acquired or one not learned, and

next gift is the interpretation of those languages of course we see this

these example in Acts 2:1-13. I will be discussing this more next week

as we take a closer look at this, but remember, that we saw in

1 Corinthians 13 that these have not been done away with at this time.

And the last sentence is that it is all the same Spirit that Yahshua has

Has sent and it is at His will)
