INTRODUCTION:
1. Turn with me in your Bibles to Hebrews 1:1-4.
2. The name Hebrew is interesting:
a. It is a direct reference to Eber. (Eber is in the direct line of Noah
thourgh Shem and actually Peleg, one of Eber’s sons)
b. This is important because. (Peleg was one of Abraham’s ancestors who is
is our ancestor through faith)
c. That that is important to know. (Because Abraham was the first to be called
Hebrew Gen. 14:13)
d. The word Hebrew means. (To pass over, or to pass through, or to take
away)
e. And we can find the first reference in Genesis 14:13. (This was when some
came against Sodom and Gomorrah and captured Lot)
f. We find a form of this word in Gen. 15:17. (The word Aw-bar means to
cross over and is in reference to the smoking pot passing between the
halfed animals for the covenant)
g. It is that covenant we enter into by faith through Yashua. (Thus is the reason
some are calling themselves Hebrew, it is through our ancestor)
3. The date of this book is a little unsure. (Although it is some time before the
Destruction of the temple in 70 AD, some say 66-70 AD)
4. The author of this book is not disclosed. (Some say Barnabas because of the
Content of the book)
a. The book was written in a very high Greek. (I believe Paul was dictating to
Apollos who was very educated)
b. Now remember, that is my opinion. (I did not say that was a fact, just my
educated guess)
c. One of the early church heads Clement of Alexanderia. (Said it was authored
by Paul and written by Luke)
5. It would seem the book may have been written to teachers:
a. This position was taken because of Heb. 5:12. (By now you ought to be
teachers but you are still needing someone to teach you)
b. But it could be cause they had not matured. (1 Cor. 3:1-7, by the way Paul
refers to Apollos here as a teacher)
c. We need to stay contextual in our teaching. (Always looking for the basis for
what is being said)
6. This book is good to learn because we will see a lot of OT basis throughout this
Book.
7. Let’s read Heb. 1:1-4, Pray!
I. In times of old Yahweh spoke in many ways. V1
A. The writer here begins a transition in the times that is important.
1. Yahweh, in the past spoke to prophets:
a. The Heb. for prophets is. (Heb. means inspired man, and the root is
someone who speaks from inspiration)
b. The word in the GK is. (Means inspired speaker, and the two root words
are fore teller and to show or to make know Yahweh’s thoughts) Look
c. The word inspiried in the GK in this passage is. (Is to carry, or to be
moved, or in this case by the Holy Spirit)
d. So Peter is saying. (GK no discourse declaring the purposes of Yahweh
in Scripture can have any interpretation one wants, because it is a
declaration of Yahweh)
e. Notice the word “spoke”, or in KJV. (GK in times past, or we would
understand it to be the OT)
2. In times in the past:
a. This is a reference to the OT. (Times before now, and the word in the GK
in in many portions, meaning portions of time)
b. We must keep in the fore front of our minds. (The writer is making a
distinction between past divine experiences and present divine
experiences)
c. This sets us up to know. (That there is a transition coming that we must
be ready for or we will miss it)
3. In the past we see different ways Yahweh spoke:
a. The word in the GK. (Means different manners or in different forms tells
different than now)
b. Let’s look at some. (Ex 3:2 burning bush, 1 Kings 19:12 Elijah still small
voice, Isa. 6:1 in the vision of the temple, Hos. 1:2 Family circumstances
Am 8:1 the basket of summer fruit)
c. We can see Yahweh using all kinds of ways. (To get His point across to
His people)
II. Now the Father has spoken to us through His Son. V2
A. The Father is speaking different today.
1. The word “Last days” means:
a. The last . (GK means the last times, referring to a period of time, could
refer to the period of time before the end of this age)
b. The word days. (GK means the period of time that will end in the return
of the Messiah)
c. So the writer speaks of a period of time. (That will end in the second
coming of the Messiah)
2. The Father is the one doing the speaking still:
a. The only thing that changed is the method He spoke to us. (Just wanted to
wanted to keep this in context of this passage)
b. Now the Father is speaking to us. (Through His Son look at John 15:15
He spoke what the father had given Him)
c. So the Father has made know what He wants us to know. (Through Yashua
His Son the Messiah or the anointed one)
3. Yashua is eternal and the Heir:
a. The word appointed. (GK means to set or to establish, so Yashua is the
established heir)
b. And the word heir. (GK means one who receives His allotted portion
based on sonship, or in this case the Messiah)
c. Jesus is born of the Father. (Look at 1 John 5:1one of the tenets of the
faith if you will is to believe Yashua is born of the Father)
III. Yashua is the exact impression of the Father. V3-4
A. Now we get into the nature of Yashua.
1. Yashua is the exact brightness or radiance of the Father:
a. The word brightness or radiance. (GK means the exact majesty as that of
Father, and we can look at that too some extent in Is. 6:1-4, Ez 1:28
Speaking of the rainbow after a rain)
b. The root words. (GK mean there is a light that beams forth from Him,
glory that beams forth from Him)
c. The word glory. (GK means magnificence, majesty, dignity and grace, it
is difficult to relay this understanding)
2. He is the express image of the Father:
a. The word image. (GK means to stamp the exact impression of someone
unto someone or something else.
b. Person means. (The very essence of someone or something, it can also
mean the foundation or the very basis of something or someone)
c. This is relayed in Scripture. (Look at John 14:9 if you have seen me you
have seen the Father, and Gen. 1:26 let us make man in Our image)
3. He sustains all things and after purifying all things He set down:
a. The word “sustain” in the GK. (Means He is the preserver of all of the
universe, keeps things from dying and from disorder)
b. And He does this through His Word. (GK for word is utterance, but the
root word is His commands)
c. Remember, Ps. 1:6 speaks of His instruction. (And our benefit and the
benefit it is to others and we ponder and murmur it, also look at Gen. 1:3
the word “said” in the Heb. is command)
d. Then after making purification for sin. (GK means to make ceremonially
clean, or to wash off, being the Lamb of God, look at Mk 1:44 offering
for cleasning after being healed of leperessy and 2 Peter 1:9 purged or
washed off cleansed from their sins)
e. He sat down at the right hand of Majesty. (Yashua’s work is done and He
is at the right hand of Majesty a place of honor)
f. And He is superior to all of the angels in the heaven. (And we will take a
look at that next week)
