INTRODUCTION:
1. Turn with me in your Bible to Heb. 5:3-4.
2. Last week we took a look at Heb. 5:1-2.
3. We saw, Let’s look at the appointment and reason for the high priest. V1-2
A. The writer goes back to the High Priest described in the Bible as
Opposed to one that would have been contemporary.
1. Every High Priest is appointed for service to Yahweh:
a. This word “appointed” or “ordained” in the GK. (Means to set
or to put in place, to appoint)
b. But it is made up of two root words. (The first means to “go
between, as in between two individuals)
c. Now the second root word means. (To stand or to be
stationary)
d. So in this we get the idea that the High Priest. (Was to stand
between two individuals)
e. Look at Duet. 5:28-31. (In verse 31 the word “stand”
means to “appoint”, or “ordain” and it is used with the
understanding of being between man and Yahweh so
something could be relayed between man and
Yahweh)
f. So this high priest was to stand. (Ordained to go between
man and Yahweh for the purpose of relaying)
g. But look where the High Priest is taken from. (He is to be
taken from men, this is important for us to get
this will also qualify Messiah)
Look at Ex. 28:1 come from the Israelites
Look at Lev 21:10 Taken from among his brothers
1). Look at Is. 7:14 Prophecy of Yashua born among
His brothers
2). Look at Matt. 3:16-17 and Luke 4:18 which comes
From Is. 61:1-2 and look at Is. 11:1-2 describes
Messiah High Priest and King, mark this down
We will be revisiting this.
2. Now look at the one served, it is Yahweh:
a. This word service is really interesting. (GK means “in front
of” or in this case in front of God)
b. So this high priest was to go in front of God. (And this had to
do with men)
c. We are able to see this in Lev. 16. (Aaron went before
Yahweh for himself and the people, look at verses
6, 15 of Lev 16)
d. We see the purpose of standing between. (In this case
between Yahweh and man)
3. The purpose is to offer gifts and sin offerings for men to Yahweh:
a. This word “offer” in the GK. (Means to “bear towards” or
“to tender”)
b. It is made up of two root words. (One is to “carry” or “to
bring” and the other is “forward” or to carry
something forward )
c. Now, what is identified in this verse. (The first is “gifts” GK
means present, or gift)
d. But the second is “sacrifice for sin”. (The word sacrifice GK
means “to blow smoke” but also means to “kill” or
“slay” and Heb. means “to slaughter”)
e. “Sin” in the GK and Hebrew means. (To wonder away from
or to violate Yahweh’s law)
4. In verse 2 we find the frame work to minister from:
a. He is able to deal gently. (The word able is “to be able, have power whether by virtue of one’s own ability and resources, or of a state of mind, or through favourable circumstances, or by permission of law or custom)
b. And the word “gently” means. (GK to be affected moderately or in due measure to preserve moderation in the passions, especially anger or grief of one who is not unduly disturbed by the errors, faults, sins of others, but bears them gently)
c. Also those “going astray”. (GK to go astray, wander, roam about, now remember the definition of sin is to violate
or wonder away from Yahweh’s law)
d. The “ignorant” . (GK to be ignorant, not to know, not to understand, unknown, but the root word is to not exercise the mind, or don’t study to show themselves approved)
Look at Acts 19:1-7
e. The reason for these qualities is, “he is subject to weakness”.
(The word weakness is to be without strength and
And to be impotent, but to word “subject is
Interesting and made up of two root words)
1). The first is “around”
2). Is to “lie”
3). Put these two together it means “to lie around” meaning to be
So weak we just lie there and don’t do anything.
f. Here is the idea. (The high priest is able to stand between
the people and Yahweh with intimate understanding of
their needs due to their being strengthless, from his
own experiences)
Look at Ex. 32:1-4 The golden calf
Look at Ex. 32:11, 31-32 Moses interceding
Look at 1 Tim. 3:1-7 Qualification for Overseers
Look at Acts 20:28 Shepherd the flock
4. This week we are going to take a closer look at the appointment of High Priest.
5. Read Heb. 5:3-4, Pray!
I. Human high Priests required sacrifice for themselves. V3
A. Now we are going to look at some differences.
1. Because of the weaknesses of a human high priest:
a. This is in reference to verse 2. (The human high priest is
subject to weakness)
b. Now remember the word “subject” in the GK. (Is to lie
around, as one without strength to stand)
c. So because the human high priest. (Has these weaknesses
himself, is the set up for the rest of this verse)
2. He has to make sacrifice for himself:
a. So this human high priest. (Being like everyone else in
nature has weaknesses in himself)
b. And because of those weaknesses. (He must makes
sin sacrifices for himself and for the people)
c. We can see this in Scripture. (Look at Lev. 4:3 and 9:7,
when he sins he is to sacrifice for himself)
1). Look closely at this verse in Lev. 4. (The priest is to take
Care of his personal sin for three reasons)
2). His job is to serve before a Holy God. (And his life is at
Stake, look at Ex. 28:33-35, if the high priest entered
The holy of holy in sin he would die and they would
Not hear the bells any longer and pull him out with
A rope that had been tied to him, this covers two
Two reasons, Yahweh is holy, and the priest would
die)
3). The third reason. (His sin would bring guilt on the
People of Israel according to Lev. 4:3 our sin,
Especially those in leadership will bring guilt
On all)
4). Look at 1 Cor. 5:1-8. (Paul talks about the leaven of sin
In the body is leaven and makes of unable to
Celebrate Passover)
5). Look at Luke 1:5-23 They didn’t hear the bells and he didn’t
Come out for a long time.
a). Look at Ex. 30:6-7. (Aaron’s job was to burn the
incense before Yahweh, this job took at 30 mins.)
b). Look at Num. 6:24-26. (This is the blessing the people
were waiting for.)
3. No one takes this honor of themselves V4:
a. This word “take” is interesting. (Gk means “to take” but it
made up of two roots words)
1). The first is. (To receive)
2). The second is. (To take for oneself)
b. This means no one, that is a real high priest. (Can take this
this office for himself)
1). Now you need to know. (This would fly in the face of the
One who held the office of High Priest in that day,
Since the office was purchased through Rome)
2). Look at Acts 23:2-5. (This word “know” in the original
Language can mean “to have regard for, or to
Cherish)
3). Paul may have been saying he didn’t recognize him as high
Priest. (Because he was not appointed by Yahweh)
4). Look at verse 3 of Acts 23. (Paul speaks a curse, and
History has it this man spent the rest of his life
Being hunted like a wild animal)
c. And that is the second part of Heb. 5:4:
1). The high priest is called by Yahweh. (GK means “to give
Name to” or Yahweh gives name to someone)
2). Look at Ex. 28:1-3. (Yahweh had name them, and given
Them the spirit of wisdom to serve His purpose)
3). Look at Acts 13:1-3. (The Holy Spirit told them to set
Them apart and send them out, they were called or
Given a name)
4). Look at Eph. 4:7-16. (Yashua or the Messiah has given
Us gifts, and He personally gave some to be leaders)
5). Now notice, the process is the same OT and NT. (The Spirit
Of wisdom is on those that are leaders, and you are
Able to recognize that call by the specific gifts given)
6). We are able to see and recognize His call. (According to
Specific gifts given to each person)
7). Which means if a person claims a call. (But the gifting is
not Present, it wasn’t the call of Yashua, but his own
Imagination)
8). Look at Deut. 29:15-20. (The imaginations of our hearts
Can lead us to places we ought not go, just as the
High priest in the day of this writer)
